How to Apply for Passport Online in India?

For travel to other countries, a passport is required. It is necessary to have an official international travel document issued by the Indian government in order to travel abroad for any reason, including education, pilgrimage, tourism, business, medical visits, or family visits.

Well, with the advent of online application processes, getting a passport in India has become simpler than ever. Now you can complete the entire process without stepping out of your home. So without any further ado, let’s start. 

Documents Required to Apply for Passport 

Before moving to the registration process, make sure that you have a few things that are mentioned below in your hand.

  • Date of birth proof ( Aadhar card, Birth certificate, Driving License, PAN card, or 10th certificate).
  • Present address proof of last 1 year ( Telephone bill, photocopy of bank passbook, gas connection, Electricity bill, Voter ID, Aadhar card). 
  • 10th certificate needed to apply for the ECNR category
  • Regarding the Tatkal application, the Ghazatted officer’s certificate (Annexure B).

Steps to Apply for Passport 

The procedure to apply for password is completed in a few steps. Follow the step-by-step instructions and complete the process. 

For Registration Process

  • First of all, navigate to the Passport Seva website i.e.
  • Over here on the top left side of the screen click on the New User Registration option. 
  •  Now, input the details on the required fields to create an account.

Note: To avoid any problem with your application make sure that you enter the correct name as per your other documents.

  • As soon as you fill in all the details click on “Register”.

In this manner, you have created your account. Now return to the Passport Seva website and write your registration login ID, password, and characters in the image. Once done click Login. 

For Filling the Form

  • As soon as you log in to your account, click on the Apply for Fresh Passport/ Reissue of Passport” link.
  • Now choose the type of application you want to submit. 
  • Fill in the requisite details like personal information, address, family details, and more. 
  • Once done click Submit Application at the bottom right.
  • Thereafter click View Saved/ Submitted Applications. 
  •  You will see the application you just submitted. To pay and schedule an appointment, use the radio button next to it.

Pay Fees And Make Appointment To Apply For Passport Online

  • Choose the online payment mode and click Next.
  • Here a list of Passport Seva Kendra from your city will be displayed on the screen along with the date and time.
  • Select one of these Passport Seva Kendra locations that are near you.
  • Once done, click Next.
  • Then click on the Pay and Book Appointment option.
  • You will now be redirected to the payment gateway via this. 
  • After completing your payment, the Passport Seva website will be displayed to you.
  • To print your transaction receipt click on the “Print Application Receipt”. 
  • Following the submission of your application, you will also receive an SMS containing the appointment details. You will need to present this message to the passport office as proof.


Congratulations! You have successfully apply for passport online in India. You can now start your overseas trip or use your passport as identification when necessary.
